Help! I Want to Stop Smoking

Are you a smoker and want to kick this dangerous habit? You have more support than you think. Around 70% of American adults want to quit smoking but doing so isn’t a simple process.

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable diseases, disabilities, and deaths in the United States. So choosing to quit can do wonders for your health.

At Open Water Medical, located in Beaufort, Morehead City, and Goldsboro, North Carolina, our team helps people improve their lives with smoking cessation services. It’s a tough battle, but we can provide you with all the support and resources you need to succeed.

Why quitting smoking is such a challenge

Although many smokers want to quit, it’s not an easy process. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that each year, over 21 million adults try to quit smoking and only three million of them are successful.

Why is it that so many American adults fail to quit smoking? Nicotine. Tobacco products contain thousands of chemicals, and nicotine is the chemical that keeps smokers smoking.

Nicotine has a similar effect on your brain as other addictive drugs. This is because nicotine triggers the release of dopamine. Many people refer to dopamine as the “happy hormone”  since it gives you a sensation of pleasure.

Cigarettes deliver nicotine to your brain within seconds. This quick delivery floods your brain with dopamine, and that feeling of pleasure makes you want to smoke more. In other words, it’s the reason you experience cravings when you haven’t had a cigarette in a while.

Your brain adjusts to this routine, so it expects you to keep delivering nicotine for dopamine production. Take that away, and your body starts to experience withdrawal symptoms like anxiety and difficulty concentrating.
